THE SKINCARE GUIDE

Five popular Japanese facial lotions to know

Researched guide · Product descriptions from official sources · Updated 13 October 2026

Japanese skincare shelves can be overwhelming: similar bottles, different texture names and the word “lotion” on products that look nothing like a body cream. This guide gives you five recognized Japanese facial lotions to compare, with the exact Japanese names and the evidence behind their inclusion.

This is a researched shopping guide, not a hands-on review. Texture and formula descriptions below are attributed to the brands. We have not personally tested these five products, and the numbered sections are navigation, not a best-to-worst ranking.

What does “lotion” mean in Japanese skincare?

The products here are 化粧水 (keshōsui): facial lotions often described in English as hydrating toners or skin conditioners. Do not confuse them with 乳液 (nyūeki), an emulsion, or with a body lotion. Look at the product’s purpose and instructions rather than relying on the English word alone.

What is the evidence for “popular”?

Popularity takes more than one form. Naturie has a product-level sales claim within a defined market; Hada Labo has brand-level sales evidence. IHADA, ELIXIR and IPSA have dated awards listed by their brands. These different measures cannot be combined into an overall top-five sales chart. Each product section names the scope and date of its evidence.

HADA LABO

Gokujyun Hyaluronic Lotion

肌ラボ 極潤ヒアルロン液

Retailer-priced · 170 mL bottle

Rohto describes a gentle thickness and four types of hyaluronic acid used as moisturizing ingredients. The Japanese product page lists no fragrance, no colorants and no ethanol. This is the regular Gokujyun lotion, not Gokujyun Premium or the Light version.

Worth comparing if: Compare this if you prefer a little thickness rather than a very watery texture. The texture description comes from Rohto, not our own test.

Before buying: Match the Japanese name and bottle size. A refill, 400 mL pump and similarly named versions are separate listings. The manufacturer uses open pricing, so the retail price depends on the store.

WHY IT IS INCLUDED · BRAND-LEVEL SALES

In its January 2025 anniversary announcement, Rohto reported 17 consecutive years of No. 1 unit sales for Hada Labo in the specified self-service/drugstore basic-skincare market, covering five product categories through May 2024. This is a brand/series result, not proof that this individual lotion is Japan’s best-selling toner.

NATURIE

Hatomugi Skin Conditioner

ナチュリエ ハトムギ化粧水/スキンコンディショナー R

¥748 · 500 mL bottle

Naturie describes a fresh, non-sticky texture, with hatomugi (Job’s tears) extract as a moisturizing ingredient. The current Japanese formula is listed as fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Its 500 mL format is much larger than the other standard bottles in this guide.

Worth comparing if: Compare this if a light texture and a large bottle matter to you. Size is useful for comparing value, but a bigger bottle is only worthwhile if the product suits your routine.

Before buying: Choose the Skin Conditioner R lotion rather than the gel or milk. The brand lists open pricing; ¥748 is the official online-shop price checked for the regular bottle, not a guaranteed price at every store.

WHY IT IS INCLUDED · PRODUCT/CATEGORY SALES

Naturie’s June 2026 announcement reports No. 1 unit share for the lotion in the self-service lotion-type toner market, using INTAGE SRI+ item-level data for February 2025–January 2026. This is a defined market and period, not an all-channel global ranking.

IHADA

Medicated Clear Lotion

イハダ 薬用クリアローション

¥1,980 · 180 mL bottle

Shiseido describes a watery, lightweight texture. The Japanese product page lists no fragrance, no colorants and no added ethanol, and identifies it as a Japanese quasi-drug. It lists tranexamic acid and dipotassium glycyrrhizate as active ingredients.

Worth comparing if: Compare the ingredient list if fragrance-free and no-added-ethanol claims are priorities for you. Those features do not establish that it will suit every person with sensitive skin.

Before buying: Clear Lotion is different from IHADA’s Moisture/Uruoi Lotion. Read the current bottle and ingredient list; the brand explicitly says its tests do not guarantee that nobody will experience allergies or breakouts.

WHY IT IS INCLUDED · HISTORICAL AWARDS

IHADA’s official award page lists first place in MAQUIA’s 2022 first-half sensitive-skin-care category, along with a 2023 first-half readers’ award in the fluctuating-skin-care category. These are dated awards, not current sales rankings.

ELIXIR

Lift Moist Lotion ba

エリクシール リフトモイスト ローション ba

¥3,410 · 170 mL bottle

The current Japanese range has Fresh/Mizumizushii and Moist/Shittori versions. Shiseido positions it as moisturizing care for firmness and radiance. Choose the lotion, not the similarly presented emulsion.

Worth comparing if: Compare the two versions if texture is important to you. “Fresh” and “Moist” identify options within the range; they are not a promise that either is universally right for a particular skin type.

Before buying: Look for the ba version and the exact texture name. Older numbered versions may still appear in overseas listings, so do not assume an older review describes the current formula.

WHY IT IS INCLUDED · 2025 AWARDS

Shiseido’s current award listing reports first place in @cosme’s 2025 second-half new-toner award and first place in BITEKI’s 2025 second-half mid-price toner category. These support recognition of the lotion range; they do not establish a 2026 sales position.

IPSA

The Time R Aqua e

イプサ ザ・タイムR アクア e

¥5,500 · 200 mL bottle

IPSA’s current Japanese page describes a watery, non-sticky feel and lists the formula as fragrance-free and ethanol-free. It is labeled a Japanese quasi-drug. The e version launched nationally on 23 April 2026.

Worth comparing if: Compare this if you want to explore a higher-priced option and can check the texture at a counter. A higher price and an award are not guarantees of a better result for your skin.

Before buying: Keep the final “e” in your search. The older The Time R Aqua is a different version. The 100 mL bottle is listed at ¥3,520; the ¥5,500 comparison here is for 200 mL.

WHY IT IS INCLUDED · 2026 AWARDS

IPSA’s current product page lists first place in non-no’s 2026 first-half toner award and second place in BITEKI’s 2026 first-half mid-price toner category. This is editorial recognition of the current e product, not a sales ranking.

How to buy the version you mean

  1. Match the full name. Save the Japanese names above. Lotion, emulsion, gel, refill and different moisture levels can share similar branding.
  2. Compare bottle sizes before prices. A 100 mL bottle and a 200 mL bottle are different purchases. A refill is not a complete bottle.
  3. Check the current ingredient list. Formulas and packaging change. “Fragrance-free,” “alcohol-free” and a skin test are not guarantees against irritation.
  4. Check the seller and market version. Use the brand’s product page as a reference. For overseas listings, compare the exact product name, size and version; do not assume a familiar brand name identifies the Japanese formula.
  5. Keep expectations realistic. Sales and awards indicate recognition, not that a product will solve a skin concern or suit everybody.

Use each product according to its label, and stop using it if you notice irritation. If you have a persistent skin problem, seek professional advice rather than choosing a treatment from a popularity list.

Questions before you shop

Which one is the cheapest?

Among the fixed reference prices shown here, Naturie’s 500 mL bottle at ¥748 has the lowest listed price. Hada Labo has retailer-set pricing, so this does not prove Naturie is always cheaper than every Gokujyun offer. Compare the actual offers available to you.

Which ones are fragrance-free?

The checked Japanese pages list Hada Labo Gokujyun, Naturie Hatomugi, IHADA Clear Lotion and IPSA The Time R Aqua e as fragrance-free. Check the exact version and current label when buying. We have not applied that claim to every product sold under those brand names.

Are these personal recommendations?

They are research-based candidates for comparison. This article compares official product information and recognition. Hands-on impressions can be added after testing, with the product version and date clearly identified.

Where are the purchase links?

Official product and price-source links are provided alongside Amazon.com paid links. Naturie has a checked product listing; the other Amazon links open searches because the exact current versions were not verified. Availability and shipping depend on the seller and your location.
