THE BREAKFAST GUIDE

What to buy for breakfast at Japan’s convenience stores

Meal ideas, official sources and the author’s existing tasting notes · Updated 13 October 2026

If you have an early train to catch or would rather start sightseeing than sit down for a hotel breakfast, a Japanese convenience store can be a useful first stop. You do not need to buy a large meal: start with something savory, choose a drink, then add another item if you are hungry.

My first suggestion is an egg sandwich and a drink. If you prefer rice, choose an onigiri instead. The combinations below are editorial meal ideas, not breakfast sets sold by the chains, nutrition plans or a popularity ranking.

A LOCAL STARTING POINT

I’m a 22-year-old university student who has lived in Japan all my life. My favorite chain overall for food taste and quality is 7-Eleven. For a first sandwich, I recommend its egg sandwich: in the version I tried, I liked the fluffy bread, moist filling and chunky egg white. Read my full tasting notes, including what might not suit everyone.

What should you buy for breakfast?

Choose according to your appetite and the time you have. These are starting points; use the selection and prices at the store you visit.

01 / BREAD FIRST

Egg sandwich + coffee or tea

A straightforward choice when you want a savory filling and soft bread. Choose a bottled drink if you would rather skip the coffee machine.

02 / RICE FIRST

Onigiri + a drink

Start with one rice ball for a small breakfast, or add a second item for a larger meal. Check the filling before you pick up a similar-looking package.

03 / SMALL APPETITE

Yogurt or bread + a drink

Browse the chilled yogurt and bread sections for something that suits you. Check whether you need a spoon and keep chilled food cold.

04 / BIGGER APPETITE

Two savory items + a drink

Try two rice balls, or combine a sandwich with another item. If you want a hot snack, check what is actually ready at the counter that morning.

For bread lovers: start with an egg sandwich

Look for たまごサンド (tamago sando, egg sandwich) in the chilled sandwich section. A specific option is 7-Eleven’s こだわり THE たまごサンド. Its official description lists an egg-salad filling seasoned with mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Names, recipes and regional versions can change.

Pair it with the coffee or tea you prefer. If the store has counter coffee, check the menu for the size and hot or iced version before ordering. A bottled drink is another practical option when you are in a hurry.

My taste-based choice: 7-Eleven’s egg sandwich is my first recommendation, but FamilyMart’s version may appeal if you enjoy a stronger mayonnaise flavor. Those are my impressions of the products I tried, not a promise about every serving.

For rice lovers: onigiri and a drink

Onigiri are filled rice balls. Tuna mayonnaise is a useful first flavor to look for if you already enjoy that combination. On FamilyMart packaging, シーチキン®マヨネーズ means Sea Chicken mayonnaise; the product is made with fish, not chicken meat.

Choose one rice ball, then decide whether you need another savory item. One alone felt small for a full meal in my 7-Eleven tasting notes. Your appetite may be different, so do not treat a single portion as a guaranteed full breakfast.

A FamilyMart example is its hand-wrapped Sea Chicken mayonnaise onigiri with FAMIMA CAFÉ blend coffee. These are separate purchases. FamilyMart’s official page describes the rice-ball filling as including yellowfin tuna and bonito flakes. Check the current package if ingredients matter to you.

If you only want a small breakfast

Browse the yogurt or bread shelves and choose a portion you feel like eating. Availability varies, so this is a category suggestion rather than a recommendation for a particular yogurt or bakery product. Check whether the yogurt needs a spoon and ask at the checkout if you need one.

If you prefer a milky coffee, Lawson’s MACHI café latte is one option. In the latte I tried, the milk flavor stood out clearly. This is a drink recommendation based on taste; a latte alone is not presented here as a complete meal.

If you need something more substantial

Build on the same starting point: two rice balls and a drink, or a sandwich plus another savory item. Browse the chilled meal section if you want a larger meal and check the heating instructions before buying.

A counter chicken snack is another possibility if you want one and it is ready. Do not assume the full hot-snack selection will be available early in the morning. My Famichiki review explains why it is my personal favorite chicken snack, while the Nanachiki review gives a different tasting comparison.

How to buy breakfast without getting stuck

  1. Choose food before the drink. Check the whole product name and portion. Similar packages can contain different fillings.
  2. Add up the actual displayed prices. The combinations in this guide have no fixed set price. Drinks, sizes and extra items change the total.
  3. For coffee, follow the store’s instructions. Check whether to order at the counter, where to collect the cup and which machine button matches your purchase. Ask staff if you are unsure.
  4. Check heating and utensils. Follow the package’s instructions. “Atatamete moraemasu ka?” means “Could you heat this up?” Ask for a spoon when needed.
  5. Decide where you will eat. Do not assume there is an eat-in area. If you use store seating, tell the cashier and follow the posted rules. Keep chilled sandwiches and yogurt cold and follow use-by instructions.

Useful label words: たまご (egg), ツナマヨ (tuna mayo), おにぎり (rice ball), ヨーグルト (yogurt), and カフェラテ (café latte). Product names do not establish every ingredient: use the current package and ask for help when you need to check allergens or dietary suitability.

Breakfast questions, answered

Which convenience store should I choose?

Start with the one on your route. My personal first sandwich choice is 7-Eleven, but you do not need to make a special trip before trying the nearby store. Compare the three chains through my tasting notes.

How much does a konbini breakfast cost?

There is no single price. Add the food and drink prices at your store and decide whether you want another item. Regional versions, portion sizes and changes to the product lineup can affect the total. The official pages below provide product information, while the store’s displayed price is the one to check when buying.

Can I buy breakfast the night before?

Only if you can follow that food’s storage and use-by instructions. If you cannot keep a chilled sandwich or yogurt refrigerated, choose another plan rather than leave it in a warm room overnight.

Are these the most popular breakfasts in Japan?

No breakfast sales ranking is claimed here. These are suggested combinations using familiar food categories and selected items from our main guide.
